Conference events 'could support Big Society'
Conference events could be used to support the current Big Society drive, as one expert notes the volunteer workforce - an integral part of the government concept - should not be thought of only as a budget-cutting measure.Tina Thompson, director of Third Sector Management Solutions, warned attitudes towards unpaid staff should change and a conference event may help instil a good professional approach when it comes to recruiting, training and managing such individuals.
She notes this process costs money and should not be ignored, if the "same level" of volunteering is to be maintained, or even expanded.
Agenda Consulting's report People Count Third Sector 2010 revealed the turnover in the voluntary sector remained higher than the UK average during the 12 months leading up to March this year, although it did decrease over the period.
The highest rates for unpaid staff leaving were in the retail and fundraising sectors, indicating groups in these industries may wish to stage conference events in order to ensure employees are well-equipped to deal with the issues specific to voluntary working.
